Distractions are all around us. In modern society, there is more information and more distractions than at any other time in history. The flood of information overworks our senses to the point where they have become numb. Maintaining focus despite our oversaturated minds is a dying art, and everyone you know faces this same dilemma. For this reason, those who can cut through all the information and misinformation, those who learn how to make clear plans and maintain focus on them, will have an advantage and excel in every competitive endeavor.

The Importance of Focus

The ability to focus is one of the essential characteristics of the human brain. Focusing allows us to concentrate on the matter at hand, making it possible to complete complicated tasks and design ingenious solutions to problems we encounter. It helps us analyze our environment and gather more information pertinent to our goals.

Without focus, it would be difficult to concentrate on detailed information. Even though our brains are powerful, they are only helpful if we can use them to hone in on a specific problem. Focus helps us understand the intricacies of causal forces and probable outcomes from the actions we choose. It is what makes problem-solving, and thus progress possible. Distraction, conversely, does none of these things. This distinction is why it is crucial to develop our ability to manage distractions and build focus.

One Thing at a Time

If you’re like most people, keeping track of tasks and appointments can be challenging. Focus allows us to keep track of assignments and other things we have to do, but it is also essential that each task we accomplish is part of a larger, more strategic plan. Having a good plan and breaking it down into small steps is a practice that will help us maintain focus, even if we are juggling several items.
